Frequently asked questions

How does the timezone overlap tool work?

You pick your company’s timezone and your working hours (e.g. New York, 9am-5pm). The tool calculates how many hours of that window fall inside standard business hours (9am-6pm) for remote workers living in each country. Countries with higher overlap are better candidates for living abroad while keeping your job.

What is considered "good" overlap?

4-6 hours of overlap is usually enough to stay in sync with most teams — enough time for a daily standup, code review, and synchronous meetings. Below 3 hours typically requires async communication and early-morning or late-night calls. Above 6 hours is effectively working the same shift.

Does this account for daylight saving time?

Yes. The calculator uses your browser’s current timezone offsets for each location, which means DST is factored in at runtime. Note that DST transitions happen on different dates in different countries, so the overlap number may drift by 1 hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn.

Can I work remotely from any country with enough overlap?

Timezone overlap is necessary but not sufficient. You also need to consider visa/tax residency (our Visa Checker and Tax Residency Calculator cover this), internet quality, cost of living, and whether your employer allows working from abroad at all. Many companies still require you to stay tax resident in a specific country.
