Living in Valencia

Spain’s value king — beach, bikes, paella, and DNV

Last updated: April 2026

Valencia is having a moment. Rent is roughly 30-40% cheaper than Barcelona for comparable quality of life, the beach is a 20-minute bike ride from the old city, and the pace is noticeably less frantic. The Turia gardens — a 9km park built on a diverted riverbed — cross the entire city and make it the best bike city in Spain. It became a top nomad destination because it combines Spanish lifestyle with lower cost and one of the best city-to-beach ratios anywhere.

If Barcelona feels expensive or saturated, Valencia is the obvious Plan B. Same Spanish DNV rules, warmer climate (never truly cold), excellent bike infrastructure, and a tight-knit international community. The city is small enough to walk/bike everywhere but big enough to have a real cultural life. Paella was invented here, which is reason enough.

Where to live in Valencia

Russafa

Nomad capital of Valencia. Cafes, coworking, trendy bars.

El Carmen (Ciutat Vella)

Historic centre, cobblestones, nightlife.

Ensanche

Elegant grid, central, shopping. Slightly pricier.

Cabanyal / Playa

Beachside, historic fishing quarter, rising fast with nomads.

Benimaclet

Local village-feel neighborhood inside the city. Students and artists.

Popular coworking spaces

  • · Wayco Russafa — main nomad hangout
  • · Wayco Cabanyal — beachside sister location
  • · Utopicus Valencia
  • · Lanzadera Marina — startup focus
  • · Botanic Cowork

Food scene

Paella Valenciana (the original — chicken, rabbit, beans), fideuà, arroz negro, and horchata con fartons. Central Market is one of Europe’s best old-school food markets. Ricard Camarena (Michelin 2 stars) showcases modern Valencian cuisine.

Getting around

Compact city. Metro, buses, and an excellent bike-lane network make a car unnecessary. Valenbisi bike share is cheap and effective. Beach is 15-20 min by bike from centre. Valencia airport connects to most of Europe.

Internet tip: Same Spanish ISPs as Madrid. Fibre is universal. Coworkings have business-grade uplinks.

Visa notes

Same Spanish DNV as Madrid/Barcelona — EUR 2,520/mo income, 3+2 year duration, Beckham Law. Valencia’s foreigner office (oficina de extranjería) is less overwhelmed than Madrid’s or Barcelona’s, so processing tends to be faster.

Healthcare & safety

Valencian public health is excellent. Private: Hospital Quirón, Hospital NISA. GP private USD 55-80.

Very safe. Pickpockets around Plaza del Ayuntamiento and Russafa during nightlife.
