Living in Budapest

Central Europe’s thermal-bath-and-ruin-bar beauty

Last updated: April 2026

Budapest is two cities rolled into one, separated by the Danube: hilly, quieter Buda and flat, lively Pest. The city is beautiful at a scale few places match — the Parliament, the bridges lit at night, the thermal baths at Széchenyi and Gellért, the ruin bars built inside bombed-out buildings. Hungary’s White Card digital nomad visa grants a 1-year stay with renewal, and the cost of living remains the best value among major EU capitals. The language is notoriously hard, but most nomads function fine in English in central districts.

White Card visa + one of Europe’s lowest costs + visually stunning centre + flat 15% income tax if you become resident. For freelancers wanting EU-adjacent residency without Berlin or Lisbon prices, Budapest is the obvious move.

Food scene

Goulash, langos, paprikash, and Central European bakery traditions. The Central Market Hall is iconic. Stand Michelin (2 stars), Costes, and Borkonyha lead the fine-dining scene. Ruin bars in District VII double as food spots late-night.

Getting around

Metro (4 lines), trams (legendary tram 2 along the Danube), buses. BKK monthly pass is USD 30 unlimited. Cycling is improving but still has gaps. Ferenc Lisz Budapest Airport is 30 min by bus.

Internet tip: Magyar Telekom, Vodafone, DIGI. Fibre coverage is good; gigabit available in most central apartments.

Visa notes

White Card (Residence Permit for Digital Nomads): income proof ~EUR 2,400/month, valid 1 year, renewable once. Not a path to permanent residence directly. EU citizens need only register after 3 months.

Healthcare & safety

Public TAJ card for residents. Private clinics: Rozsakert, FirstMed. English-speaking GP visits USD 50-90. Good dental tourism destination (prices 40-60% of Western Europe).

Very safe. Pickpockets in tourist zones (Deak Ferenc, tram 2).
